Up to 50 cars may have been involved in a massive chain collision occurred this morning on the motorway between Ankara and Kırıkkale, injuring several people who had to be taken to hospitals in the region.
Several Turkish media reported that the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning near the town of Elmadağ, some 40 km east of the Turkish capital, when due to the dense fog that covered the area, approximately twenty chain collisions occurred in the same area in which a total of fifty vehicles were involved.
After the authorities were alerted, numerous emergency personnel travelled to the scene of the accident and had to attend to several drivers and passengers who were injured as a result of the impacts and who, after receiving first aid in the same area, were taken to various hospitals in the capital.
An investigation into the causes of the accident has been launched, but several witnesses confirm that, although visibility was very poor due to fog, many of the collisions occurred when trying to brake, due to the presence of ice on the asphalt because of the low temperatures, which have reached -4 ºC in Ankara.
