Mesut Özil, a former Real Madrid and Fenerbahçe player, announced his retirement from football on Wednesday through social media: “After considering it for a long time, I announce my immediate retirement from professional football. I have had the privilege of being a professional football player for almost 17 years… But in the last weeks and months, and after having suffered some injuries, it has become more clear to me that it is time to leave football”, wrote the 34-year-old Turkish-German player, who also thanked all his clubs for their support: Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe, and finally Başakşehir, the Istanbul team with whom he signed in July 2022. Özil, highly acclaimed in Turkey for leaving the German national team in 2018 after denouncing racist attacks, arrived at Fenerbahçe in January 2021 after ending his contract with Arsenal amid great anticipation, scoring 8 goals in 25 matches; but after a year, a discussion with his coach removed him from the bench, forcing him to look for another club.
