Despite dominating the game, Fenerbahçe suffered a defeat in Istanbul and is moving away from league leader, Galatasaray.
Fenerbahçe suffered a surprising loss at home by the minimum against Göztepe during the last day of the Turkish league; reigning Super League leader Galatasaray won on its visit to Alanya, while last season’s reigning champions Başakşehir was beaten by Trabzonspor and continue to sink into the relegation zone.
The only goal of the match came when only 9 minutes had passed, when in a counter play after a Fener attack on the rival area, Halil Akbunar picked up in the centre of the field a ball cleared from the Göztepe goal and, after dribbling Altay Bayındır – Fenerbahçe’s goalkeeper – in a desperate exit, he only had to give the final touch to launch the ball into the the net and establish the 0-1.
Despite the fact that the Yellow Canaries were in control of the ball during almost the entire match played last night at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, the team led by Erol Bulut did not know how to create scoring chances, thus suffering their second defeat in three games and their fifth home loss of the season, something not seen in the last 28 seasons.
The Canaries, who remain third in the table 3 points behind Galatasaray (who returned from Alanya with a 0-1 victory), will face Trabzonspor next weekend, which on Friday also managed to beat by the minimum in Istanbul last season’s reigning champion, Başakşehir, who has not been victorious in 8 games and is once again in direct relegation to the second division.
As for Trabzonspor, the Black Sea Storm already has a streak of 7 consecutive victories that it hasn’t had in 17 years, and 10 games without losing, and is already fourth in the Turkish league with 48 points, just behind Galatasaray , Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe.
