A massive demonstration called on Tuesday in the district of Nea Smirni, south of Athens, to protest against police violence, triggered violent and serious unrest when several groups tried to storm a police station. The clashes left 5 police officers injured (one of them with a serious head injury) and 16 protesters arrested, in addition to dozens of vehicles damaged. The protest was called after a controversial video was released on Sunday in which police appears brutally beating a young man for not showing his identification without no other apparent reason, despite their pleas and the complaints of several citizens who observed the scene: an incident for which Athens police has opened an investigation.
