Turkey, wooden cars race

Formulaz, the wooden car race held every year in Turkey

On Sunday, the 12th edition of “Formulaz” was organized in Ardeşen, a district of the province of Rize, in the Turkish Black Sea region. Formulaz is a wooden car race whose tradition dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. About 60 participants from all over Turkey competed to be the fastest to cover the 1.6 km downhill course, some of them reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h. In this curious competition, wooden cars must be made entirely by hand and must not exceed 170×70 centimetres; as part of the tradition, “pilots” must also wear long animal hair socks and rubber shoes. The name “Formulaz” is a mixture of the words “Formula 1” and “Laz“, a particular people that historically has inhabited this region of Turkey.
