Turkey, Çanakkale Bridge between Europe and Asia

Final steps to finish the Çanakkale Bridge between Europe and Asia

The Çanakkale 1915 Bridge, which links Europe and Asia across the Strait of Dardanelles, is already in its last stages of construction, and Turkish President Erdoğan is scheduled to attend the final platform placement ceremony today. The works, which began on March 18, 2017, will conclude with the inauguration of the structure on March 18, 2022, coinciding with the 107th anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory (Gallipoli). 5,000 workers, including 650 engineers, have worked on the construction of the bridge, which connects the districts of Lapseki (Asia) and Gelibolu (Europe); it measures 2,023 meters long between both ends (the centenary year of the Turkish Republic), it has the red and white colours of the Turkish flag, and its towers will be crowned by figures in the shape of a cannonball, in honor of the 1915 war hero Seyit Onbaşı.
