The Istanbul derby played on Sunday afternoon between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş came down to the wire, with the outcome decided in the final moments of the match following a controversial penalty called in stoppage time (which lasted nearly 15 minutes beyond regulation time), allowing the team led by Domenico Tedesco to secure a last-minute victory in a closely contested match between the two rivals.
Both teams played a highly intense match for much of the game, with chances coming and going for both sides but lacking precision in the final third. Just one minute into the game, Fenerbahçe had a golden opportunity when, after stealing the ball from the defense, Malian forward Nene Dorgeles found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his shot grazed the post.
Ten minutes later, the chance fell to the visiting team; Orkun Kökçü sent a pass into the center of the opponent’s box that South Korean Oh Hyeon-gyu headed from just outside the penalty spot, but Ederson made a spectacular save on the line. Despite these and other opportunities, the score remained unchanged, and both teams went into halftime without having scored.
In the second half of the match, a goal scored by Fener in the 55th minute following a corner kick was disallowed two minutes later after a thorough VAR review, which ruled the goal invalid for offside. Shortly thereafter, just before the 74th minute, Kerem Aktürkoğlu found himself alone in front of the opponent’s goal on a quick counterattack after Fenerbahçe stole the ball in midfield, but his shot was cleared by Ersin Destanoğlu.

Just when a draw seemed inevitable, the referee decided to add 8 minutes of stoppage time to the match, which would ultimately prove decisive even though some players were already beginning to show signs of physical exhaustion. It was the 90+6th minute when Nene, after driving into the opponent’s half with the ball, was ruthlessly brought down just as he entered the box by Agbadou, who received a yellow card.
The penalty was clear — despite protests from the players on the team led by Sergen Yalçın — and the one who stepped up to take it was Aktürkoğlu, who shot to the left and managed to beat Destanoğlu by a hair’s breadth, sparking total euphoria among the Canaries’ players and fans. In the final seconds, Beşiktaş still dreamed of an equalizer with a shot by Orkun Kökçü that, however, grazed the crossbar.
With this victory in the derby, Fenerbahçe reclaims second place, which had been temporarily taken by Trabzonspor after their surprise defeat of Galatasaray in the Black Sea city; Galatasaray now holds just a one-point lead over its pursuer with only six matches remaining, though they have played one fewer game. Beşiktaş, for its part, saw a point slip away at the last moment but remains in 4th place in the standings, with 52 points after suffering its sixth loss of the season.
