Galatasaray won the Istanbul derby with a 1-0 victory over Beşiktaş in an intense match at the Tüpraş Stadium in the Bosphorus metropolis. The match, in the 25th round of the Süper Lig, was settled by a goal from Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, which allowed the visitors to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
The only goal of the game came in the closing minutes of the first half. Osimhen took advantage of Leroy Sané’s pinpoint cross and headed the ball expertly into the box, beating the keeper and putting Okan Buruk‘s side ahead before the break.
In the second half, however, the game got seriously complicated for the reigning Turkish league champions when Leroy Sané was shown a straight red card on 62 minutes after the VAR flagged an ugly stamp on Rıdvan Yılmaz, leaving the visitors with ten men for more than half an hour of the game.
From that point on, Beşiktaş took advantage of their numerical superiority to increase the pressure on their opponents, but they were met by a solid defence and an inspired Uğurcan Çakır, who prevented an equaliser with several decisive saves under the sticks. Although the Black Eagles eventually dominated possession and shots on goal, Galatasaray were able to hold firm and take their chances, managing to keep the score until the end of the game.
With this win in the Istanbul derby, Galatasaray extended their lead in the standings and opened up a seven-point gap over nearest challengers Fenerbahçe, who host Samsunspor tomorrow. Beşiktaş, meanwhile, remain fourth in the table but are now on 46 points, five behind Trabzonspor, who are third and face second-bottom Kayserispor away on Monday.
