In a pulsating Süper Lig clash at the Fatih Terim stadium in Başakşehir, west of Istanbul, Beşiktaş beat on Sunday Rams Başakşehir 2-3 thanks to a decisive stoppage-time winner, taking Sergen Yalçın‘s side’s unbeaten run to 11 games this season since Fenerbahçe came from 2-0 down to beat them in early November.
The game opened with the home side taking the lead after 36 minutes, when Davie Selke took advantage of a poor clearance from the keeper to volley the ball past the helpless Ersin Destanoğlu and into the back of the net. However, the visitors’ response was swift, and South Korea’s Hyeon-Gyu Oh equalised on the stroke of half-time, stealing the ball from a clueless defender and finding himself alone in front of the keeper.
Early in the second half, Orkun Kökçü put Beşiktaş ahead in the 58th minute after a solo run into the six-yard box, thanks to a masterful pass from Hyeon-Gyu Oh that was reminiscent of Spain’s Marco Asensio in Fenerbahçe’s win over Gençlerbirliği last weekend.
The game was very evenly matched in terms of play and scoring chances, and the tables could turn at any moment; and with just two minutes remaining in the 90 minutes, Bertuğ Yıldırım headed home from a Başakşehir free-kick in the six-yard box to level the scores.
Hekimoğlu, the hero of the night
With the game all but settled and time running out, Mustafa Hekimoğlu emerged as the hero for the Black Eagles to make it 3-2 in the 90th minute+6th minute, powering a powerful kick almost under the posts from a cross into the home side’s six-yard box. Hekimoğlu’s goal sparked euphoria among the Beşiktaş fans, and no wonder: it came possibly on what was to be the last play of the game, as the referee had added precisely six minutes of extra time.
The win leaves Beşiktaş on 40 points and in fifth place, just above Başakşehir in the Turkish league standings, where they have 33 points. Elsewhere, Fenerbahçe won 2-3 away to Trabzonspor, and Galatasaray were merciless 5-1 winners over lowly Eyüpspor.
