Famous Turkish singer Serdar Ortaç, arrested for illegal gambling

Famous Turkish singer Serdar Ortaç is one of 20 people arrested in Turkey in recent hours following a police investigation into an alleged illegal gambling ring.

Turkish media reported in recent hours the arrest of around 20 people, including Ortaç himself as well as artist Mehmet Ali Erbil and several prominent social media influencers. According to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation was launched in connection with the crime of ‘promotion of illegal gambling’, and in the last few hours several arrests were reportedly made at the homes of those suspected of being part of the scheme.

Turkish press reports that Ortaç, a 54-year-old Turkish singer and songwriter of Kurdish origin, was caught by the police at his home while he was asleep, while Mehmet Ali Erbil, an actor, comedian and TV presenter, will not initially give his statement to the police due to health problems, according to local media reports.

In addition to Ortaç and Erbil, another of those arrested was İbrahim Yılmaz, a Turkish influencer with around 20 million followers on social media; other influencers and well-known personalities such as Muzaffer Zorbey Erkoçlar (another social media phenomenon with around 2 million followers), Alexander Menshikov or Sefa Caner Sarıçam were also arrested for the crime of illegal gambling.
