Beşiktaş suffered a serious setback in yesterday’s final match of the 12th round of the Turkish Premier League against Rams Başakşehir, leaving them 10 points adrift of leaders Galatasaray and virtually throwing away their title chances amid a glaring playing crisis for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team.
In a boring, goalless match in a near-empty Fatih Terim stadium, both teams started strongly and probed each other, with a dangerous chance coming after just seven minutes when Rafa Silva’s fierce shot was saved by Şengezer. However, it was Başakşehir who was the main attacker in the first half, but without really threatening the goal defended by Günok.
After the break, Beşiktaş stepped up their attacks in the second half and dominated possession, but played a dull and sloppy game with no clear-cut chances. Proof of this is that the most exciting moment of the second half came in stoppage time, when in the 92nd minute Milot Rashica was brought down in the box by Lucas Lima and the Beşiktaş players claimed penalty, in what looked more like a fake that the referee did not signal.
This was the end of a match to forget in which Beşiktaş once again showed that they are a long way from their glory days, with a clear lack of play and ideas on the pitch that could cost them dearly if they don’t put things right, especially considering that we haven’t even finished half the season yet. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe did play their part and won their matches convincingly; in the case of the Lions, moreover, they did so with two goals by Osimhen and against a direct rival like Samsunspor, thus reinforcing their position at the top of the table with 31 points, still unbeaten.
