Samsunspor wins and consolidates second place in the league

Samsunspor easily beat Antalyaspor, who was defeated on its visit to the Turkish Black Sea city, allowing the team from Samsun to stay in second place in the Turkish league standings, which is led by Galatasaray.

The match started at the 19 May Stadium in Samsun with the team led by the German Thomas Reis creating several dangerous moves; one of them around the 23rd minute forced a stoppage of the match for several minutes after Kılınç was brought down in the box. Finally, after 5 minutes of consulting the VAR, the referee announced that it was not a penalty to the disbelief of the Samsunspor players and the protests of Reis himself, who could not believe what he was seeing.

As the first half drew to a close, a counter-attacking move down the left flank by the Red Lightning left Mouandilmadji standing alone in front of goal, but without a good angle to shoot; the Chadian striker could have attempted the shot and taken the glory, but at that moment he saw his team-mate Carlo Holse begging for the pass and in an ideal position to shoot: Mouandilmadji, not thinking twice, laid the ball off for Holse to fire a powerful shot just inside the post into the back of the net, making it 1-0 to the home side.

Shortly after the start of the second half, the second and final goal of the game came in the 49th minute from Landry Dimata, who chested the ball into the back of the Antalyaspor net with an impressive bicycle kick from Mouandilmadji. Just two minutes earlier, in another play involving the pair, it was Mouandilmadji who had scored from Dimata’s pass, but the goal had been disallowed for offside.

Heart-stopping final minutes

In the remaining minutes, the Antalya team continued to try and try again with little success, while the Samsun team was not content with the result and tried to extend their lead. With only 8 minutes to go, it was Mouandilmadji again who appeared to start a solo run from midfield that left him alone in front of the goalkeeper; the goalkeeper managed to deny him and Mouandilmadji let Ntcham have a go, whose shot was saved in extremis under the crossbar by Veysel Sarı, who had prudently placed himself there seeing what was coming and with Antalyaspor’s Bosnian goalkeeper on the floor. A truly heart-stopping play.

There were four more minutes of added time, but there was little more to report in a match that allowed Samsunspor – undoubtedly the surprise team of the season – to stay second in the table for another matchday, just three points behind Galatasaray, although the reigning champions have played a game less. The Black Sea team has won 8 of its 11 games so far this season, although second place could be taken away from them by Fenerbahçe, who also has a game in hand and beat Trabzonspor 2-3 on Sunday.
