Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by telephone with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, following the Israeli attack on a residential area of Doha that targeted the Hamas negotiating delegation, killing six people – including a member of the Qatari security forces – although none of them were members of the delegation.
During the telephone conversation – according to sources of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey quoted by various media – Erdoğan condemned the attack, stressing that such an action only contributed to aggravating the conflict, tensions and instability in the region, denouncing it as a violation of international law and a clear attack on the sovereignty and security of Qatar, a friend and ally of Türkiye.
In addition to offering his condolences for those killed in the Israeli attack, the Turkish president stressed that his country will support the government and people of Qatar using all its means to do so: “The attack has been directed against the security and stability of our brotherly country Qatar, and I strongly condemn it,” Erdoğan denounced in a statement released on social media, in which he accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyayu of seeking to further destabilise the region.
“Türkiye will continue to support the Palestinian people as well as its ally and strategic partner Qatar against Israel’s acts of piracy, which seek to drag the entire region towards disaster,” the Turkish president insisted. During the conversation with the Qatari leader, the two agreed to continue their joint efforts to stop the massacres in Gaza, where the Israeli army continues its ruthless offensive against Gaza City, forcing the mass exodus of its population.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry also issued a statement along the same lines as Erdoğan’s statements, denouncing the Israeli attack on Doha against the Hamas negotiating delegation: “With this attack, Qatar, a mediator in the ceasefire talks, has now been added to the list of countries targeted by Israel in the region. This constitutes clear evidence of Israel’s expansionist policies and its adoption of terrorism as a state policy,” the text said, adding that “targeting the Hamas delegation while ceasefire negotiations are ongoing clearly demonstrates that Israel seeks not peace, but the continuation of war.”
