Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Turkey on Wednesday where he was received in Ankara by his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdoğan, in a key visit that comes at a time when Israel’s military operation in Gaza continues unabated, with UN reports now openly speaking of genocide and that the real death toll could reach 680,000 dead.
As reported by the public broadcaster TRT, Abbas was received at the Beştepe Presidential Complex by Erdoğan, who greeted the Palestinian president at the entrance; then both posed for an official photo on the steps, in front of the Turkish and Palestinian flags. The two then entered the presidential palace complex for a closed-door meeting, which was also attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The Communications Office of the Presidency of the Republic, through an official statement, reported that during Erdoğan’s meeting with the Palestinian president, Israel’s systematic attacks against Palestine as well as regional issues were discussed. In the meeting, the Turkish president further stated that Israel‘s genocide in Gaza has entered a new phase with its ground offensive, that the aggressive and expansionist policies of the Netanyahu government threaten not only Palestine but also the stability of the entire Middle East, and that the attack on Qatar or the territorial claims on Jerusalem are a good example of this.
Erdoğan also pointed out that more and more political and opinion leaders are criticising Israel’s actions, and that Türkiye will continue to defend the cause of the Palestinians and denounce Israeli aggression in all international forums. Turkey’s priority is to achieve an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and put an end to the humanitarian tragedy in the region, insisted the Turkish president, who promised that his country will be the voice of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly, while calling for greater unity in the Islamic world to confront the Israeli threat. He also called for the consolidation of full political unity in Palestine to support all these efforts.
After the initial meeting, Erdoğan hosted a closed-door dinner at the same Presidential Complex in Ankara in honour of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who last year gave a historic speech in the Turkish parliament in which – among other issues – he denounced the attitude of the United States for being “complicit in the genocide” in Gaza.
