A forest fire which broke out last night in the Alanya district of Turkey’s Antalya province, and which hours later appeared to have been brought under control thanks to the efforts of firefighting teams, has in recent hours been rekindled by strong winds and spread this morning to a nearby forest, where air and ground efforts are now being made to contain the fire.
Turkish media reported that the wildfire – the exact cause of which is still unknown – broke out at around 11 p.m. last night in the Ali Efendi neighbourhood, south of the city of Alanya. After the emergency services were alerted, numerous firefighters and forestry workers were sent to the scene, where the firefighting efforts lasted throughout the night.
After about 10 hours, the intensity of the wildfire was reduced, but the flames damaged several properties and forced the evacuation of the entire population of Ali Efendi, as the blaze approached residential areas.
Although the wildfire appeared to be under control, this morning, the wind helped to rekindle the flames, which spread rapidly through the İspatlı, İshaklı, Kargıcak and Kocaoğlanlı neighbourhoods of Alanya. At least 8 helicopters, two aircraft, 30 water trucks and hundreds of personnel on the ground were still fighting this new forest fire in Turkey this morning.
