Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, announced in the last hours that the forest fire that has raged for 3 days in Gelibolu (Gallipoli) in the province of Çanakkale is practically under control, and confirmed that the historical cemeteries in the National Park have not been affected. However, the destruction caused by this new wildfire in Turkey has been enormous, as aerial images captured by drone show.
As reported by TRT, the fire broke out at around 16:28 on Saturday 16 August in an area between the villages of Tayfur and Cumalı, located in the Gelibolu district on the European shore of Turkey’s Çanakkale province, in northwestern Türkiye. Driven by the wind, the fire quickly spread through a wooded area towards the neighbouring district of Eceabat.
Due to the magnitude of the fire, a total of 7 villages in the region had to be evacuated: Karainebeyli and Ilgardere in Gelibolu district, and the villages of Yolağzı, Kumköy, Büyükanafartalar, Küçükanafartalar and Beşyol in Eceabat. Meanwhile, some 1,300 forestry personnel, supported by 343 vehicles on the ground and 12 planes and 18 helicopters from the air, fought relentlessly throughout the weekend to try to prevent the flames from damaging the historic Gallipoli National Park.
Although the forest fire can now be considered under control, as the Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry confirmed on Monday, work continues on cooling the ground and assessing the damage, while the scale of the environmental disaster and destruction caused by the fire over the past three days is evident from the aerial images taken by drone.
