A serious bus accident early today on the outskirts of Istanbul left at least four passengers dead and 26 injured. CCTV footage recorded the moment when the vehicle took a curve at high speed, causing the bus to overturn and run off the road. The driver has been arrested for now.
According to the Turkish daily Hürriyet, the accident occurred this morning in the Sancaktepe district – on the outskirts of the Asian side of Istanbul – near the Paşaköy neighbourhood. The bus, which belonged to the Tokat Yıldızı company and was travelling between the provinces of Tokat and Tekirdağ, hit the highway guardrail and overturned. The emergency services were alerted and numerous police, fire and medical personnel were immediately deployed to the scene of the accident.
Once the rescue and assistance to the victims began, it was found that four of the passengers had died as a result of the accident, while 26 others were injured and were taken to local hospitals, where two were discharged shortly afterwards and 24 others were still receiving treatment this morning. Meanwhile, the bus driver has been arrested and questioned after the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of Anatolia (Asian side of Istanbul) launched an investigation into the causes of the tragedy.
In a statement released by the Governor of Istanbul, he said that the incident occurred at 6:15 a.m. local time (5:15 CET) on the North Marmara Highway (O7) passing through the Paşaköy neighbourhood of Sancaktepe, and that the driver, after losing control of the bus, ended up crashing the vehicle into the barrier, causing it to overturn on the road.
Part of this section of the motorway had to remain closed to traffic until a crane finally removed the remains of the crashed bus. Security cameras located in this area of Istanbul recorded the exact moment when the bus, entering the curve at high speed, hit the side guardrail and immediately overturned on its right side, continuing to move for several metres lying on that side due to inertia.
