Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen of the DSM-Firmenich team won the first stage of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey (TUR), which ran for 134.7 kilometres through the Mediterranean province of Antalya, with a time of 2 hours 56 minutes and 31 seconds, thus obtaining the precious turquoise jersey .
A total of 172 riders from 25 teams and 14 countries started this 59th edition of the Tour of Turkey, which started on Sunday from the Duden Park in Antalya for a first stage that took place in good weather and on a mainly flat route with no major gradients, which meant that the victory was decided by sprint: It was then, just 50 metres from the finish line, that Jakobsen launched a spectacular attack that secured him the podium, while Belgian riders Sasha Weeames and Simon Dehairs came second and third respectively.
The Turkish Cycling Tour continues on Monday with another 190.6-kilometre stage between the towns of Kemer and Kaş. Over the eight stages of the race, the cyclists will cover a total of 1,188 kilometres. The final stage will take place on Sunday 28 April in Istanbul.
