One person was killed and ten others were injured outside the city of Antalya in southern Turkey after a cable car cabin 600 metres above the ground collided and broke open, leaving 184 people trapped and suspended in mid-air in 25 other cabins, Turkish media reported.
The incident occurred when one of the iron poles supporting the Sarısu cable car line, which belongs to the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, broke for reasons still under investigation and struck one of the cable car cabins, which was in operation at that moment with hundreds of people riding the attraction at that time. The impact caused the glass and the floor of the cabin to shatter, causing all the occupants to immediately fall into the void.
After the emergency services were alerted, a large rescue operation was launched in Antalya to get all the people trapped on the cable car out, involving 543 personnel, 7 helicopters, 108 vehicles, 6 ambulances, a military transport plane and several drones, as well as a team of 15 psychologists to assist the victims and those affected by the accident. The rescuers, however, were unable to help one of the people who fell several metres from the affected cabin, a 54-year-old man who died in the fall. The Turkish Ministry of Justice has announced the opening of an investigation into the accident.
