The COVID pandemic caused 211,000 deaths in Turkey, according to data on the COVID-19 pandemic recently published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK). As published by the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet, these data would confirm suspicions that the Turkish Health Ministry did not publish the real numbers of deaths from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, something to which TÜİK itself contributed, since it did not publish official statistics of deaths during 2020 and 2021, at the peak of the pandemic. Thus, while the Turkish government maintains the official figure of 83,000 deaths from COVID in the country, the figures now published by TÜİK reveal an unexpected increase of 211,000 deaths during the worst years of the coronavirus pandemic: that is, 128,000 more than those recognized by the government.
