The coronavirus pandemic reduced life expectancy in Turkey, according to data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), showing that between 2020 and 2021 the average life expectancy in the country stood at 77.7 years, compared to 78.3 years registered in the period 2018-2020. This fall, of 0.5 years, was even greater in the age group over 85 years, where life expectancy fell by 1.6 years: this group is precisely the most vulnerable to COVID-19. Turkish women continue to live longer than men: 80.4 for women and only 75 years for men. By region, life expectancy is higher in Istanbul (81.1), Ankara (80.4) and Izmir (79.8), while the provinces with the lowest longevity are Şırnak (72.5), Hakkari (73.1), and Muş (73.2).
