A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck northern Pakistan and Afghanistan yesterday evening, killing at least 13 people, 9 of them in the Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The earthquake, with its epicenter in a mountainous area 40 km. southeast of the Afghan town of Jurm, and whose intensity the US Geological Survey (USGS) lowered to 6.5, also caused more than 200 injured in both countries, and could be felt in Kabul and Islamabad as well as in New Delhi, in neighboring India, and in Tajikistan. The tremor caused panic among the population of Pakistan and Afghanistan, who ran into the streets despite the low temperatures in the region. Cracks and even the collapse of several buildings have been reported, although it will still take days to quantify all the damage.
