The death toll from the wave of earthquakes that has struck Afghanistan now exceeds 2,000 and is expected to rise further given the country’s limited resources to help those affected and the difficulties of reaching the most isolated areas. The Taliban administration, which in the first hours after the earthquakes had announced on 16 deaths, put the death toll today at 2,053 dead and 9,240 injured, while admitting that these figures will rise as the earthquakes have caused severe damage, especially in the provinces of Herat and Badghis in the northwest of the country.
As many as three earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5, 5.9 and 6.2 struck northwestern Afghanistan on Saturday. The quakes, the most devastating in decades, could also be felt strongly in neighbouring Iran, where residents of Mashhad, an Iranian city about 300 km from the epicentre of the quakes, experienced moments of panic and reported that the walls of their houses shook. Afghanistan is regularly hit by earthquakes due to the collision of the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian plates in the region: in 2022, another violent earthquake killed more than 1,000 people in the country.
