The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, declared a state of emergency throughout the country for at least two weeks and dismissed the entire executive, in an attempt to quell unprecedented mass protests over rising fuel and gas prices. Thousands of people demonstrated in Almaty, the former capital of the country, where at least 200 people were arrested and about 100 policemen were injured; security forces were at many times outnumbered by protesters. Tokayev, who assured that he will not resign, also imposed a curfew and the blocking of messaging apps and media. The protests have been sparked due to the rise in the price of liquefied petroleum gas, mostly used as fuel for vehicles.
