Turkey has expressed its rejection of the prohibition announced by the Taliban: “It is neither Islamic, nor human.”
The expulsion of women from universities by the Taliban in Afghanistan “is contrary to Islam,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu assured this Thursday, expressing the “serious concern” of the Turkish government over this measure during a joint press conference in Ankara with his Yemeni counterpart.
“This ban is neither Islamic nor humane. Islam promotes education”, said Çavuşoğlu showing the firm rejection of the measure announced by the Taliban, with whom Turkey maintains contacts although without officially recognizing their government. “We have asked them (the Taliban) to be inclusive. In addition, we have conveyed our position on women’s rights and girls’ education,” said the minister.
Çavuşoğlu recalled that there are approximately one million Afghan women aspiring to study at university, adding: “What harm could the education of women do to Humanity, or to Afghanistan? What kind of benefit does such a decision bring?” he wondered.
Turkey: “Education is a fundamental right”
Just yesterday, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its rejection of the Taliban announcement stressing that education is a fundamental right that everyone should benefit from, without any discrimination, and asked Afghan authorities to reconsider the measure.
“The Taliban administration has taken the decision to ban female students from universities in Afghanistan. This is a decision that goes against the spirit of Islam,” said Ibrahim Kalın, spokesman for Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan.
The expulsion of women from Afghanistan’s universities was announced Tuesday by the Taliban, which has controlled the country since the withdrawal of Western troops in 2021, and marks the latest move by the radical Islamist group to exclude women from Afghan social and political life.
