A fire on a yacht anchored in the marina of Bodrum, a popular tourist destination located in the Turkish province of Muğla on Turkey’s Aegean coast, spread to seven other vessels, leaving a total of seven sunken yachts and causing damage to an eighth vessel.
According to Turkish media reports, the fire started in the early hours of the morning for reasons yet to be determined on a motor yacht anchored in the harbour of the town of Yalıkavak, on the northwest coast of the Bodrum district. The flames, fanned by the wind, spread to seven other motor yachts between 20 and 30 metres in length located next to the affected vessel.
Following the alert, numerous teams of firefighters, police and medical services were deployed to the area. During the extinguishing work, the teams faced difficulties due to the wind. The work was also supported by a fast rescue boat from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety, as well as fire-fighting vessels from the Bodrum Regional Port Authority. The fire was finally brought under control after great efforts and intensive intervention from land and sea.
The causes of the fire are being investigated
The Mayor of Bodrum, Tamer Mandalinci, the Commander of the Coast Guard Station, Raşit Gödelek, and the head of the Regional Port Authority, Tuncay Aydın, attended the scene of the fire and closely followed the extinguishing efforts on the ground. Speaking to reporters, Mandalinci said that this was an unfortunate incident and highlighted the work of the firefighting teams who fought to control the fire, the causes of which are still unknown.
As a result of the incident, seven of the motor yachts anchored in the Bodrum marina sank and another was damaged. Cooling efforts were still continuing this morning after the flames were extinguished, with coastal security units working from the sea and fire crews from land.
This incident again highlights the difficulty of controlling fires in marinas, where flames can spread quickly between boats before emergency crews can secure the area. In recent years, several fires in Turkish marinas, especially in tourist destinations such as Antalya, Bodrum or Fethiye, have caused damage to dozens of yachts worth millions of dollars.
