A fire that broke out this morning in the port of Fethiye, a famous tourist destination located in the province of Muğla, on the west coast of Turkey, burned several boats and luxury yachts until it could be brought under control by firefighters, who had to intervene from land and sea.
According to the DHA (news agency), the fire broke out for reasons as yet unknown at around 9:00 am local time (8:00 CET) on one of the boats anchored in the Karagözler neighbourhood of Fethiye, and the flames quickly spread to three other boats.
After the emergency services were alerted, police, ambulances and fire engines arrived at the scene, as well as teams from the coastguard service, who towed the four boats on fire to the open sea, where work began to cool the vessels, in an operation that lasted two hours and took place both at sea and on land.
For now, it is not known what caused the fire that destroyed these boats, and the Fethiye authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause. A total of four people who were intoxicated from inhaling the smoke caused by the fire had to be assisted by medical teams and given supplementary oxygen.
