Six people were killed in Isparta province, southwest Turkey, after two military helicopters on a training flight collided in mid-air causing one of them to crash to the ground.
Turkish media reported that both UH-1 aircraft belonged to the Isparta Military Aviation School and had taken off from Süleyman Demirel airport for a training flight. At around 11:00 a.m., while flying over the Keçiborlu district, the two helicopters collided in mid-air: one managed to make an emergency landing, but the other crashed into a field near a petrol station.
Numerous emergency crews were dispatched immediately on the scene to try to rescue the victims; a lieutenant who had managed to survive the crash of the second helicopter was taken alive to hospital, but eventually died despite the efforts of medical personnel. In addition, two crew members of the first helicopter were hospitalised after an initial examination at military medical facilities, although they are in good health.
A witness to the accident explained that the two helicopters collided in mid-air and flames started to shoot out of both aircraft, with one of them finally falling head first and crashing to the ground. The mayor of Isparta, Şükrü Başdeğirmen, confirmed that all the city’s fire and rescue teams were dispatched to the crash site – located some 35 km away – after receiving the news of the incident. One of those killed in the crash is the commander of the Isparta Land Aviation School, Brigadier General İsa Baydilli.
