Twenty passengers were injured in the province of Aksaray, in the centre of Turkey, after the driver of a bus carrying 31 people lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn on the motorway connecting Aksaray with Konya.
Turkish media sources reported that the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning near the town of Eşmekaya, some 200 km south of the Turkish capital, Ankara. The bus, driven by H.K. and travelling between Marmaris on the Turkish Aegean coast and Ağrı in the far east of Anatolia, skidded on the road probably due to the presence of ice on the road, falling into a ditch and overturning. Other drivers who witnessed the accident immediately alerted the emergency services by calling 112.
Teams from the gendarmerie, the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) and the National Medical Rescue Unit (UMKE) travelled to the scene of the incident, where they provided first aid to the occupants of the bus – owned by the well-known company Kamil Koç – which included 28 passengers and three staff members, including the driver. A total of 20 people who were injured were taken by ambulance to the public hospital in Aksaray, where their progress is favourable, according to the latest information.
The governor of Aksaray, Ali Kumbuzoğlu, who travelled to the scene of the accident and also visited the injured in hospital, confirmed that the bus accident was due to the icy conditions of the road and the snow in the region, and that 10 passengers who were unharmed from the crash were temporarily accommodated in a hotel in the Eskil district. ‘We are taking the necessary precautions to avoid further accidents in our province. Our drivers must pay attention to all warnings,’ he said.
