Trabzonspor got a victory by good fortune in the closing match of Matchday 9 of the Turkish Football League at the Şenol Güneş (Papara Park) stadium in the city of Trabzon, against an Alanyaspor that, at times, made life difficult for the Black Sea Storm. The match, fairly even for much of the 90 minutes, was finally decided in the second half when, after 54 minutes, a rather unlucky performance by Kosovar defender Fidan Aliti led him to shoot into his own net while trying to steal the ball in the small area from Trabzonspor’s Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu… Things that only happen in football, perhaps.
Aliti’s inexplicable move was celebrated by Onuachu, the players and the home fans as if it was a goal of their own, and ended up giving Trabzonspor the three points they needed to move up two places to the fifth position in the standings, getting closer to the top of the table. However, they are still a long way behind Fenerbahçe, who now has 27 points after Sunday’s home win over Hatayspor, and remains unbeaten in the Turkish league. Just two points behind them is Galatasaray, who beat Beşiktas in the Istanbul derby played on Saturday.
