Turkey to start using self-made AI robot dogs in 2026

A new generation of domestically developed quadrupedal robots – commonly referred to as “robot dogs” – will enter service in Turkey in early 2026, marking a decisive step in the move towards state-of-the-art, home-grown autonomous systems.

The prototype, dubbed PROTEO, has been created by Istanbul-based Turkish start-up Hyperever, a company specialising in the design of articulated robots, embedded software and automation systems, state news agency Anatolia reported. This military robot is equipped with artificial intelligence and is designed to perform surveillance, logistical support and explosive ordnance disposal missions.

Thanks to its compact and sturdy structure, PROTEO is able to move with great agility even in difficult terrain, carrying loads of up to 35 kilos and reaching speeds of 12 kilometres per hour. It can operate for 4-6 hours under autonomous, semi-autonomous or manual control, guided by GNSS navigation systems and advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, making it a great asset for the Turkish Armed Forces in high-risk operations.

Hyperever’s founder and CEO, Çayan Baykal, explained that his team has worked intensively on “improving the resistance of our robot to extreme conditions. These are certainly very sensitive devices, and to be useful in military environments they must meet certain requirements. A high payload capacity is also essential”.

The name PROTEO used by this robot dog also has a deep symbolic meaning: it pays homage to the Mexican rescue dog Proteo, who lost his life during the search efforts after the devastating 2023 earthquakes in Turkey, described as ‘the worst seismic disaster in a century’ in the country and in which more than 53,000 people died.
