Turkish police located this morning several explosive devices in a roadside bag on the Trans-European Motorway (TEM) as it passes through the Beykoz district of northern Istanbul, forcing to close the area and a bomb squad to intervene.
Turkish agencies reported that the incident took place at around 7:00 a.m. near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge at the connection to the Kavacık neighbourhood. Witnesses reportedly notified the police that a bag containing several explosive devices had been abandoned by the roadside. After receiving the tip-off, numerous Istanbul police officers rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area, where they were able to verify after examining the bag that it contained two hand grenades.
Explosive ordnance disposal experts found that both grenades still had the safety ring attached and collected both explosive devices, transferring them to the Istanbul Police Department. The incident forced the temporary closure of one of the lanes of the TEM motorway in the direction of Edirne, causing traffic jams at the crossing to one of the bridges across the Bosphorus.
