An app for mobile devices promoted by the Istanbul Metropolitan City Council has set itself a hitherto unthinkable goal: to register where all Istanbul’s stray cats and dogs are and check whether they are being cared for and fed.
The new application, called SemtPati – a union of the Turkish words semt (neighbourhood) and pati (leg) – has been developed by the Turkish technology company Koç Sistem and allows information on any stray animal in Istanbul to be recorded in its database, although it will not be until early 2021 when it will be available throughout the city.
This application allows you to create a database for each animal in each neighbourhood and district of Istanbul, collecting information on whether there are people feeding and caring for it as well as whether there is a veterinarian available in the area. Each animal will have its own profile in the app, with photos, a description of its physical characteristics and updated information on its health status.
The aim of the app is to control all stray cats and dogs in Istanbul, promote their adoption, and if necessary coordinate sanitary or other measures, such as sterilisation; it also allows that, in case the animal suffers a disease or is injured, it can receive veterinary assistance more quickly; finally, the application will also be used to locate missing or abandoned pets.
