A Liberian flag-of-convenience cargo ship en route to Egypt from Ukraine ran aground on Tuesday near the Haydarpaşa dock on the Asian side of Istanbul, forcing the suspension of traffic in the Bosphorus Strait in both directions.
The 229-metre-long vessel, named “Alexis”, ran aground on the shore of the Bosphorus Strait due to engine failure, Turkish media reported, forcing a rescue operation to be launched to save the cargo ship. The increasing maritime traffic in the Bosphorus means that from time to time incidents of this kind occur off the coast of Istanbul, which in recent years has led the Turkish government to promote the Istanbul Canal macro-project: an artificial water canal similar to the Suez Canal that would cross the north of the city.
