At least one person was killed and 50 others were injured – two of them seriously – when two metrobuses collided this morning near the Sefaköy stop (Küçükçekmece district), west of Istanbul.
According to breaking news reports in the Turkish media, the accident occurred at around 9 a.m. local time (8:00 CET) when a metrobus travelling in the Beylikdüzü direction lost control for reasons still unknown and collided sideways with another metrobus travelling in the opposite direction. The moment of impact was recorded by security cameras in the area.
The impact caused the first metrobus to leave the track and crash into the separation barriers, causing the windows of both vehicles to shatter and extensive structural damage to the front and centre sections of both metrobuses. Numerous ambulances and fire brigades were immediately on the scene and managed to rescue two people who were trapped under one of the vehicles.
The accident forced the immediate interruption of metrobus services in both directions at rush hour, forcing hundreds of passengers to walk to other nearby stops in order to get to work. However, the service was restored as soon as both metrobuses could be removed from the site with the help of several cranes.
In a statement, the governor of Istanbul confirmed that the accident occurred at 8:48 a.m. when two metrobuses collided, and that two of the injured are in serious condition. ‘An investigation into the incident has been launched. We convey our condolences to the family of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,’ the governor said.
