Nearly 90% of Turks use the Internet, study says

Almost 90% of Turks already use the Internet, according to the latest data from the Household Information Technology Use Survey published yesterday in Turkey, which reflects interesting data such as clear differences in the use of online services between men and women, including online shopping, and information on which social networking platforms are most used by the Turkish population.

The study, whose data was published on the website of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), indicates that 88.8% of Turks aged 16-74 currently use the internet, an increase of almost 3 points compared to the 2023 figure of 87.1%. Considering usage by gender, more men use the Internet (92.2%) than women (85.4%), a difference that also extends to the use of the State Administration’s online services, which is 80.7% among men while only 66.7% of Turkish women use these platforms.

As has been noted in recent years, online shopping continues growing, with 51.7% of internet users in Turkey now claiming to have purchased goods or services online, compared to 49.5% in 2023. 76.7% of web commerce users in the first three months of 2024 purchased clothing, footwear or accessories, with these being the most common online purchases; other common products or services were restaurant food orders (47.5%), online drinks and food packs (34%), beauty and cosmetics products (32.4%) and personal hygiene and cleaning products (29.2%).

Interestingly, the report notes that the proportion of people who participated in educational activities online fell by almost 5% compared to last year to 13.9%, with the decline being similar between men and women. The survey also shows that WhatsApp remains the dominant social networking and messaging app in Turkey, used by 86.2% of Turkish users, followed by YouTube and Instagram.

In addition, almost half of internet users in Turkey (47.9%) connect to the Internet via Smart Tvs. When it comes to buying mobile phones, tablets or internet-connected computers, 89.2% of Turks said that the main factor to consider is price, followed by hardware features (71.7%) and brand and design (67.4%).
