The blocking of Instagram that has been in place in Turkey since 2 August will be lifted today, Saturday at 21:30 Turkish time (20:30 CET), Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced, after representatives of the US company Meta and the Turkish government reached an agreement to block content that violates laws in Turkey.
Several Turkish media outlets echoed the news spread by Uraloğlu, who released a statement on the social network X confirming the news after an agreement was reached for Instagram to remove content that constitutes a crime in Turkey, including content that “contains propaganda in favour of the PKK and other terrorist organisations”, he said in a video posted on his profile. In addition, the minister announced that Meta representatives will make a high-level visit to Turkey in the coming days.
“From the beginning we have asked social media platforms to respect the laws of the Turkish Republic. As a result of our negotiations with Instagram representatives, our demands – especially those related to the catalogue of crimes in Turkey – will be met; after they have promised to work together on the censorship imposed on users (for posting content about Haniyeh), we will lift the block at 21:30,” Uraloğlu explained.
According to Turkish media reports, the agreement between the Turkish authorities and Instagram would include the following terms:
- All accounts and content linked to terrorist organisations such as the PKK, PYD or FETÖ will be removed.
- Instagram will comply with Turkish laws regarding the removal of content that constitutes a crime under the laws of the Turkish Republic.
- Turkish accounts and users’ rights will be guaranteed.
- Accounts will receive a warning before being removed or restricted by Instagram.
- Turkish users’ accounts that have been closed without prior warning will be reinstated.
- In case of any legal issues, Instagram will immediately contact and cooperate with the Turkish authorities.
