Yusuf Dikeç, the Turkish Olympic shooting athlete who has become world famous and a viral phenomenon on social media for his relaxed pose shooting with one hand in his pocket at the Paris Olympics, has announced that he wants to patent his pose, for which many have dubbed him the ‘Hitman’ or the Turkish ‘John Wick’.
Dikeç won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics in the 10-metre air pistol shooting category; but it was actually his humble and carefree attitude, competing without any special shooting equipment or glasses – he only used some small cheap earplugs and his own glasses – and, above all, his now iconic relaxed shooting pose with one hand in his pocket, that catapulted him to worldwide fame and has made him a mass phenomenon on the social media, despite the fact that – as he himself has recalled several times – he has been competing in this way for years.
Turkish media reported today that Yusuf Dikeç has filed an application to the Turkish Patent and Registration Office to register ownership of his unique pose, which many athletes, artists, influencers and other celebrities have begun to replicate. Dikeç would thus like his pose, which he has developed after years of experience participating in shooting sports competitions, to be patented and protected, after his iconic image has quickly started to appear on businesses, T-shirts and all kinds of merchandising material, leading some people to try to appropriate it.
The decision was reportedly made after an alleged scammer posing as Yusuf Dikeç tried to file a patent application for his ‘John Wick’ or ‘Hitman’ pose two weeks ago. ‘It was the application of someone who we believe had no good intentions that led us to take action,’ a spokesperson for the company Dikeç has now commissioned to file the patent told reporters. ‘Yusuf Dikeç won a medal for Turkey and has made a great contribution to promoting our country. Our athlete is also closely following the whole process,’ he said.
