At least 29 people have died in a nightclub fire in Istanbul, which broke out this morning on the ground floor of a 16-storey building in the Beşiktaş district on the European side of Istanbul, according to the latest information released to the media by Governor Davut Gül.
The fire, the causes of which are still unknown, broke out at 1 a.m. Turkish time in a building in the Gayrettepe area at ‘Masquerade‘, a well-known nightclub located on Yıldız Posta Avenue; the club was closed for renovation works that was being carried out on the premises, when, according to Turkish media reports, an explosion near the main stage triggered the fire, filling the premises with smoke and trapping those inside.
After the emergency services were alerted, up to 31 vehicles and 86 firefighters were sent to the scene, as well as numerous police and medical teams, who cordoned off the surrounding area. The governor said that the victims of the fire in Istanbul are employees of the nightclub itself, although it is not known exactly how many people were inside when the fire broke out.
Gül said that the causes of the fire are being investigated as well as possible negligence during the renovation works, adding that the venue had been licensed to operate since 1987 and had been renewed twice. For now, Turkish authorities have issued an arrest warrant for five suspects in connection with the fire at this Istanbul nightclub.
