A Byzantine cistern used to store water discovered in the ancient city of Dara, located in the province of Mardin, in southeastern Turkey, is 15 meters deep: that is, 6 meters more than the famous Basilica Cistern in Istanbul. The cistern, with a capacity for 10,000 cubic meters of water, supplied the 40,000 inhabitants of Dara, whose walls made it the main Roman bastion against the Persian invasions in the 6th century.
