The local elections in Turkey on Sunday brought good results for Turkish women, who were able to more than double their representation in city councils and municipal assemblies. For the next 5 years, women will head the municipal councils of 11 of the country’s 81 provincial capitals, 5 of them in metropolitan municipalities: Aydın, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Eskişehir and Tekirdağ.
In Aydın in western Turkey, incumbent mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu of the opposition CHP party renewed her mandate for another 5 years with more than 50% of the vote, while in Diyarbakır, the main city in southeastern Anatolia, Ayşe Serra Bucak Küçük won a victory with 64% of the support on the pro-Kurdish DEM party lists.
Ayşe Ünlüce also succeeded in renewing the CHP’s mayoralty in the important city of Eskişehir in northwest Turkey, winning 51% of the vote despite the difficult task of replacing Yılmaz Büyükerşen – the city’s mayor during the last 25 years – as mayor of the metropolitan municipality.
In Tekirdağ – in Turkish Thrace – Candan Yüceer also won with more than 50% of the vote, while in the important southeastern city of Gaziantep, former minister Fatma Şahin of the AKP party renewed her mandate as mayor for another five years with nearly 39% of the vote.
In addition, Turkish women have also increased their representation after the elections in the district mayoralties of big cities such as Istanbul – where 3 women have been elected as mayors – or Izmir, where there will be a woman governing 8 of the city’s districts for the next 5 years.
