Activists and NGOs fighting for women’s rights and equality have criticized the low number of women candidates in the parliamentary and presidential elections that Turkey is holding on May 14. The Association of Support for Women Candidates (KA-DER) regrets that of the list of 600 candidates for parliament presented by the two main parties, AKP and CHP, only 113 and 147 respectively are women: that is, 17.2%, “despite the fact that 50.7% of the population of Turkey are women” they point out, recalling that “democratization is not possible excluding women”. To this it must be added that there are no women among the candidates for the Presidency of the Republic.
