Unemployment in Turkey fell during March to just 7.9% of the working population, reaching the lowest level of unemployment in the last 20 years in the Eurasian country, according to official data published today by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).
The report presented on Tuesday by TÜİK indicates that the unemployment rate fell by 0.3 points compared to February, marking its lowest level since 2005. As a result, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over fell by 65,000 in March to 2.8 million, with an unemployment rate of 6.5% among men and 10.6% among women.
On the other hand, the number of people employed increased in March by 391,000 compared to the previous month, reaching 32.6 million. The labour force participation rate rose by 0.4 points to 53.4%, while youth unemployment – affecting job seekers aged 15 to 24 – rose by 0.1 points compared to the previous month to 15.1%.
Upon learning of the latest unemployment figures, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz highlighted that ‘the labour force participation rate among our young people is growing, as is the employment rate’. ‘Our employment increased by almost 400,000 people compared to the previous month… Thanks to the strong investments we have made in education, the number of young people graduating from higher education in our country has increased rapidly in recent years,’ the Turkish vice president said.
