The tragedy struck a family from Turkey after a landslide crushed them while they were in their vehicle in a car wash at a gas station in the province of Samsun, on the northern coast of Turkey. The owner of the gas station has been arrested following the terrible accident.
Turkish media reported that the incident occurred at a petrol station in the municipality of Canik at around 11 p.m. on Sunday 27 April. According to images captured by security cameras at the gas station, located next to the Samsun-Ordu motorway, the father was washing his car with pressurised water while his young daughters, aged 5 and 7, waited inside the vehicle and their mother watched from a distance. Suddenly, a huge mass of earth and rocks fell on the petrol station’s car wash area, trapping the family.
The emergency services were alerted and numerous firefighters, police officers, ambulances and rescue teams rushed to the scene. They were able to pull the woman, 31-year-old Çiğdem Kaya, from the rubble. She was rescued injured and taken to a hospital in Samsun, where she underwent emergency surgery for broken feet.
Tragically, rescuers recovered the lifeless bodies of the father, 35-year-old Adem Kaya, and the couple’s two young daughters, Ayla Kaya, aged 7, and Açelya Lina Kaya, aged 5. The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the collapse and ordered the arrest of the service station manager and the owner, K.Y. and Z.G., on suspicion of negligence resulting in death.
The Black Sea region of Turkey is particularly mountainous and rainy, and landslides caused by water accumulation on unstable ground are frequent.
