The famous Turkish singer Sertab Erener will return to Eurovision after a 21-year absence, in an appearance that does not represent Turkey‘s return to the famous European song contest – where the Eurasian country has not participated since it announced it was leaving in 2012 due to criticism of the organisation and the voting system – but an invitation to the Turkish artist to perform during the gala her song “Everyway that I can”, with which Turkey won the contest in 2003 and which triumphed in the charts around the world.
Sertab Erener herself, during a performance at the Atatürk Cultural Centre (AKM) in Istanbul on Sunday, announced to her fans that she had received an invitation from Sweden, where this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is being held in May, to perform a new version of her famous song “Everyway that I can”, with which she won Turkey’s only victory at the contest in 2003. The song not only triumphed in the contest but became a hit throughout Europe, and was voted the 9th best song in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest in a vote organised for its 50th anniversary.
