Turkish government rules out for now delaying the elections due to the earthquake. Sources from the majority AKP party led by Erdoğan say that there are no plans to postpone the presidential and parliamentary elections, although it is not clear if they will be held on the originally scheduled date of June 18, or if the earthquakes will influence the announcement made by President Erdoğan to bring them forward to May 14. Recently, an AKP leading figure, the former Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç, suggested that the elections cannot take place under these conditions: words strongly contested by the Turkish opposition, which insists that there is plenty of time to hold the elections despite the earthquake, and remember that elections can only be postponed if the Turkish parliament declares a war.
