Turkey’s women’s national volleyball team became European champions for the first time in their history on Sunday after beating Serbia 3-2 in a thrilling final in Brussels. It was the third time that the so-called Filenin Sultanları (Sultans of the Net) had reached a European final: the Turkish women’s national volleyball team had previously achieved it in 2003 and, more recently, in 2019 again against Serbia, but on both occasions they only could get the silver medal.
In the final, which they reached undefeated after winning all the matches in the tournament, Serbia started by winning the first set 27-25, but the Sultans recovered and managed to equalise by winning the 2nd set 21-25, thanks to the good play of Ebrar Karakurt. Again the Serbians took the lead winning the 3rd set 25-22, but the Turkish team came back again and won 22-25 in the 4th set, and finally 13-15 in the 5th set, proclaiming themselves European champions.
The women’s volleyball team was congratulated by numerous authorities, including Turkey’s Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak, who travelled to Brussels to attend the match, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan congratulated the players on their historic achievement by phone. The match was followed with great excitement in Turkey, to the extent that the hashtag #FileninSultanlari became a worldwide trending topic on the X/Twitter social network.
