The new fourth-generation battle tank designed and built in Turkey, the Altay tank, has begun mass production at Turkish automaker BMC‘s new Ankara plant, according to Turkish press reports.
As Turkish newspapers such as Milliyet reported on Friday, the Altay – which will be powered by a BATU engine developed by BMC Power, a subsidiary of BMC – has begun mass production in the Turkish capital for use by the Turkish Armed Forces and for export.
BMC‘s Ankara plant employs the latest production technologies as well as robots in the tank’s manufacturing process, as highlighted by the Turkish company’s president Fuat Tosyalı, who noted that the in-house military engines developed by BMC Power since 2024 have a power output ranging from 400 to 1,500 hp, although they will have to complete several processes before they can be used in battle tanks.
“The power group has to ‘travel’ 10,000 kilometres and must also pass certain performance tests. So far, no setbacks have been observed in our engine programme, and all components, including air and defence systems, are being tested along with the tank,” he said.
“Our factory has begun mass production of the Altay, after starting construction last year. We anticipate that it will be able to meet the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and our allied countries in the defence industry sector,” Tosyalı said. “In this factory, we will produce both the Altay tank and our 8×8 armoured combat vehicle, the Altuğ,” he also announced.
