Turkey experienced more than 17,000 earthquakes in the first half of 2024, according to data recently released by an expert seismologist, who provided information on which regions of the country experience the most earthquakes and what times of the year are most prone to earthquakes.
Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Bülent Özmen, a professor at Ankara Gazi University’s Faculty of Engineering, released this year’s seismological data, saying that between January and June 2024, a total of 17,343 earthquakes of varying intensity were recorded across Turkey, a country with nearly 1,000 active tectonic faults, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
All seismic activity in and around Turkey is monitored day and night by 1,145 monitoring stations operated by the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), said Özmen, who also offered several interesting statistics about earthquakes in Turkey. For example, of the more than 17,000 tremors recorded between 1 January and 30 June, 94 were of magnitudes between 4 and 4.9 on the Richter scale, while five of those earthquakes reached intensities between 5 and 5.9.
On the other hand, the highest frequency of earthquakes occurred between January and February, when the country recorded an average of 95 earthquakes per day, said the expert, who added that the most intense earthquake in Turkey in the first half of 2024 was the 18 April earthquake in Sulusaray-Tokat, which reached an intensity of 5.6 and left five people injured, causing the collapse of 20 houses and damage to hundreds of other buildings.
In terms of geography, Malatya was the province in Turkey that experienced the highest number of earthquakes in the first half of the year with 3,078, followed by Kahramanmaraş (2,599), Muğla (1,153), Izmir (1,000), Adıyaman (814) and Çanakkale (645).
