Tourists to be able to visit Pamukkale and Hierapolis at night

Tourists travelling to Pamukkale, one of Turkey’s top tourist destinations, will be able to visit the ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis – located just above the Pamukkale terraces – at night, Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced recently, announcing a tourism initiative for night visits to several museums and archaeological sites in Turkey.

Ersoy, who recalled that in 2023 Turkey broke its all-time record for tourist visits, stressed the importance of promoting sustainable tourism, adding that with this project tourists will be able to visit the travertine terraces of Pamukkale and the ruins of the ancient city of Hierapolis until midnight.

“We need to bring this to all 81 provinces of Turkey. Our most important asset is our archaeology… We have completed the lighting work in the ancient city of Ephesus; now, we are working on the ruins of Hierapolis,” explained the minister, who stressed that one of the problems encountered by tourists travelling to Turkey in summer is that they cannot leave the hotel during the day because of the high temperatures. “They want to go out at night, and if possible after sunset,” he said.

Known since ancient times for the therapeutic properties of its hot springs, the Pamukkale terraces received almost 2.2 million tourists in 2023 along with the ruins of Hierapolis, and this figure is expected to rise in 2024. Both Pamukkale and Hierapolis have been recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites: the former in 1988, while the ruins of Hierapolis were added to this prestigious list 10 years later, in 1998.
